ANTENATAL CARE
This is most commonly shared between your GP and community midwife, but some women, because of health problems or difficulties with previous pregnancies may also need to see an obstetrician. The first clinic appointment is usually between the 8th and 12th weeks of pregnancy. During this visit your expected date of delivery will be calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period. The midwife will also take a detailed medical history from you including details of any inherited conditions in your family or problems you have had with any previous pregnancies. Your blood pressure will be checked and a number of tests will be performed on samples of your blood and urine. At later visits the doctor or midwife will also examine your abdomen, to check the size and position of your baby, and listen to baby’s heartbeat. They will also test further samples of your urine.
