On B4226 Cinderford to Coleford road, a mile west of Beechenhurst Lodge Local miners will take you underground to show you around the old mine workings, explaining the methods used to extract coal on this 45 minute trip. The descent into the mine is steep (as is the exit) but the route through the mine is level (just over 1/2 mile). It's not suitable for pushchairs or back-carriers due to low roof in places, but children of walking age are welcome and will be kitted out with safety helmets and lamps. Practical footwear and warm clothing recommended. Above ground there is a tea room, picnic and play area, narrow gauge railway and a display of mining tools and equipment.
