Birthing in Bristol
This may occur at home or in hospital depending on where you chose to book for delivery and hopefully not somewhere between the two! You will be attended by a midwife who may ask for the assistance of a doctor during your labour. There are a number of different types of pain relief available that the midwife will discuss with you. It may be possible to have a water birth, which should be planned well in advance with your midwife. During labour your baby's heart rate will be monitored by your midwife. If this shows that the baby is in distress, if you become exhausted, or if the baby is in an awkward position, it may be necessary for you to have an assisted delivery. For this either forceps or a suction cap (ventouse) are used. In a small number of cases your baby may need to be delivered by caesarian section. It must be stressed, however, that the vast majority of women experience a natural delivery.
