ACCIDENTS

Accidents are the most common cause of death in children. You can minimise the risk to your child by a number of simple safety measures. Firstly keep small objects, plastic bags and all sharp instruments well out of their reach. Burns can be prevented by fire guards, smoke detectors, shortened kettle flex and by turning pan handles away from the front of the cooker. Stairgates should be fitted at the top and bottom of your staircase and safety catches should be fitted to all low cupboards. Alcohol and medicines should all be stored out of sight and reach, as should all garden and household chemicals. No child under the age of five should eat whole peanuts, because of the risk of choking. Never leave a child alone in or near water, including the bath. Use safety covers over all electrical sockets when not in use. Never carry a child in a car unrestrained and never leave a child on or near a road alone. Most safety equipment can be found in shops such as Mothercare, Early Learning Centre, Boots and Toys R Us.
