One of Britain's first stone-built strongholds. Building started not long after the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and the caste was significantly extended over the following centuries. Today the well-preserved ruins perch above the River Wye offering an insight into life in Norman castle and plenty of scope for exploring. Steep slope from car park (toilets) to castle entrance.
