Charity funds lifesaving research into finding vaccine to eradicate meningitis. What is Meningitus?  Meningitis is inflammation of the lining of the brain which can be caused by a number of bacteria and viruses. It is an extremely serious illness, but if picked up and treated early, most children make a full recovery. Symptoms to look out for in babies include: a high fever, an inconsolable, high-pitched moaning cry, drowsiness, refusing to feed, pale or blotchy skin, red or purple spots that do not fade under pressure (this can be assessed by placing the side of a drinking glass firmly against the rash). In older children you should look out for the same red or purple spots, and in addition, neck stiffness, drowsiness, confusion, high temperature, dislike of bright light and severe headache. You should contact your doctor immediately if your child has these symptoms. If your GP is not available, take your child to the nearest hospital casualty department. The National Meningitis Trust has a 24 hour Support Line, for general information and emotional support for families with children affected by meningitis.
