About
How did Titch Hikers’ start?
The Titch Hikers’ Guide started an amazing 26 years ago! It was the brainchild of Tricia Phoenix and Sally Stanley, who decided that it would be the ideal way for parents and carers to share information on family friendly services and facilities in Bristol. Eleven Editions on, and thousands of families in Bristol and the West are still extremely grateful to Tricia and Sally for their excellent idea and hard work.
Who is the book for?
Titch Hikers’ started as a handbook for parents-to-be and families with babies and pre-schoolers. In 2001 it grew to accommodate 0-11 year olds. Now, in 2009, we have returned to the original age span - pregnancy through to starting school.
Who are Titch Hikers’ today?
We are the unsung experts of what families in Bristol and the West really want to know about. In other words, we are all parents, parents-to-be, carers, and children who live in and around Bristol and who have experienced all the places in the books for ourselves.
What are our philosophies?
We don’t like preaching. We are here to suggest things that have worked for us and to try and help spread the word to make these aspects of life a little easier.
We also still like books and feel that, while the web is useful, there is no substitute for having a paper copy of a good publication.
How do we get our entries?
We only take recommendations from parents, carers, parents-to-be, and children for what should be in the books. (We do not include entries because they have paid us.) We are also Bristol based and so we are familiar ourselves with all the entries in the book.
How is the book funded?
The Titch Hikers’ Guide is funded through advertising and sales. The book is run on a not-for-profit basis and so relies on these sources of income for it to survive.

What about adverts?
We welcome adverts from entries included in the book or website. Please contact us if you would like to advertise in the next edition of any of the books.
Businesses use a lot of paper - what’s our green philosophy?
We want to leave our mark because we have produced a good and useful product, and not because we have added to the landfill.
